Getting The Right CNA Education

You will need some CNA education if you are planning for a career as a nursing assistant.  Your education will prepare you to take the necessary CNA certification exam.  The course will provide you with the training and education you need to work successfully as a nursing assistant.

There are a variety of course options available to you if you want to receive nursing assistant training.  You can look for courses that are offered at healthcare providers in your area (such as hospitals and nursing homes).  Check with the Red Cross in your area to see if one of your local chapters offers CNA training classes.  You can also contact local community colleges, allied health schools and other colleges to find a potential training course.

The length of courses will vary depending on where you take your class.  Some classes last only a few weeks but others will last a few months.  The length of time will also vary depending on whether you are enrolled in CNA education on full-time or on a part-time basis.  The basic portions of the curriculum will be the same no matter where you take your training.

Training will usually cost between $600 and $2000 depending on the location where you take your classes.  Many programs are less than $1000.  There are even some cases in which you can find free training or receive your training at no cost to you.  For example, you might be able to attend training if you are unemployed and can receive assistance for career training and job placement.

You will cover a lot of material during CNA education.  You will learn about certain health conditions and diseases.  Your training will help you to learn how to communicate well with your patients as well as your coworkers.  The course will teach you how to complete a variety of tasks such as:  repositioning patients, feeding patients, taking vital signs, helping a patient with toiletry and grooming a patient.  This is just a list of a few of the tasks you will learn.

During your training course to become a certified nursing assistant, you will have classroom lecture studies.  There will usually be some basic lab work as well.  In addition, you will have clinical/skills training in order to teach you how to work with patients directly.  In some training programs, you will train directly with patients.  In other cases you will use role playing and model patients for your skill training.

After you have gone through the entire length of a certified nursing assistant training, you will need to take an exam to complete your certification.  The test will have two sections which will include both a written and procedural test.  You will need to pass each part to be on your way to receiving a certification.

If you are looking to start a career as a CNA, you will need to find good education options for you.  Take your time to find the best course for your needs.

The CNA Certification Program

If you want to become a certified nursing assistant, you will need to complete a CNA certificate program.  A CNA certificate program will teach you the theory and procedures that you need to know to be a nursing assistant.  You will have hands on training teaching you how to safely take care of patients.  You might do role playing with other students and depending on the training class, will get the opportunity to work with real patients as well.

You must attend a CNA certification course that is approved by the Board of Nursing in your state.  Make certain that a course if fully accredited within your state and nationally before enrolling in the course.   Courses will be designed to meet the requirements for certification in your state.  They will prepare you not only for a career as a nursing assistant but for the certification exam you must take before working in the field.

The CNA certification exam will test both your skills and your knowledge in terms of working as a certified nursing assistant.  You will first be asked to complete the written portion of the test.  This part of the test will offer multiple choice questions.  Much of what you learned during your lectures and labs will be covered on this portion of the test.

You will then need to demonstrate several nursing assistant skills for the second half of your test.  Some testing programs will ask you to bring someone with you to act as your model patient.  You will be asked to perform about 5 different tasks.  You must complete all aspects of the task to ensure a passing grade.  For example, if you are asked to reposition a patient, you must remember to wash your hands, knock on the patient’s door and to tell your patient who you are and what you are going to be doing.

If you are receiving your CNA certificate training through a healthcare provider, you might be working with actual patients when taking your test.  You will probably have also completed much of your practicum in a live setting by assisting with patients in the facility where you are receiving training.

In order to become certified as a nursing assistant, you will need to receive a passing score on both portions of the test.  After passing the examination, you will become certified and can begin your career as a nursing assistant.  If you do not pass the test, you will need to find out how and when you can repeat the test.

You will be registered with the board of nursing in your state once you receive your nursing assistant certification.  This registration shows that you have all the credentials and have completed all the requirements to work as a nursing assistant.  There are generally continuing education credits that you will need to complete each year in order to maintain your certification.  You will also need to work a minimum number of hours throughout the year to keep your certification active.

CNA Training Classes

A CNA training course will include classroom studies, skills practice and of course some hands-on clinical experience.  In the classroom, you will start to learn about a career as a nursing assistant.  Skills practice will include role playing in which you take turns acting as the patient and also the CNA.  Role playing helps you to learn how to interact and communicate with patients.

During your skills training for a job as a nursing assistant, you will have some lab studies.  You will also perform other practice tasks.  For example, you might learn how to take vital signs by everyone in the class taking turns noting vital signs for the other students.  During the practicum portion of your CNA training classes you will learn how to take care of patients under your care.

Certified nursing assistant training will help you to learn what you need to know to become a nursing assistant.  You will learn how to communicate well with patients.  Your course will teach you how to maintain privacy for your patients.  The course will provide you with the knowledge you need to provide excellent care for your patients.

While attending training classes, you will learn how to help patients to walk from one location to another when they need assistance.  You will learn how to help a patient with their toiletry needs.  A training class will help you to learn the safe and proper way to move a patient in their bed to prevent bed sores and other injuries.  You will learn how to take vital signs and how to properly chart information on a patient.

You might feel that you are prepared to be a CNA after completing your classroom work and your skills training.  However, you will not really know how you will do as a nursing assistant until you get some hands on experience.  This is why it is important to take your practicum training very seriously.  This is your opportunity to learn directly how to care for patients.  You should not be afraid to ask questions and to ask for help while you are training.

It is important to attend all of your classes and every clinical session when completing the training classes.  You will need to study and work hard in order to complete your course with a good grade and with the knowledge that you need to start a career as a nursing assistant.

Your training will provide you with the skills and resources you need to take the CNA certification exam.  You cannot start to work as a certified nursing assistant until such time as you have passed the certification examination.

Becoming A Certified Nursing Assistant

If you are looking for a healthcare profession but are not ready to take the plunge to be a nurse, physician or therapist, you might want to become a certified nursing assistant.  Working as a CNA, will provide you with the opportunity to evaluate whether or not you want to work in the healthcare field.  After working as a nursing assistant, you might decide you want to further your career or to receive some specialty training.  For example, you might decide to complete a phlebotomy course so that you are also trained to draw blood for lab work.

There are a few steps you need to take if you want to become a certified nursing assistant.  The first thing you will want to do is to make sure that you have what it takes to work in this type of position.  (Of course, you cannot answer this with absolute certainty until you begin training).  You will want to make certain that you have the motivation and kind personality necessary to be a good nursing assistant. Are you willing to work hard and to sometimes perform duties that are less than enjoyable for you? Are you a compassionate and patient person?  If you can answer yes to these questions, you can further consider a career as a CNA.

The next thing you will need to do is to find a certified nursing assistant training program.  You can find these programs in allied health colleges, community colleges, on-site at healthcare facilities and through the American Red Cross.  Do your homework to find a reputable nursing assistant program that will provide you with the skills you need to be successful.

In order to become a certified nursing assistant, you will need to enroll in a course. Keep in mind that you should attend each class.  You will have classroom studies to learn about becoming a nursing assistant and to learn some basic medical skills.  You will also have hands on practice where you will learn how to provide services for patients.  You need to successfully complete your coursework before you can sit for the certification exam.

The CNA certification exam will include a written and oral test.  You will be asked a variety of questions pertaining to your job as a nursing assistant.  The test will include multiple choice questions for which you will need to select the best answer.  The next portion of the test will be called the skills test.  You will have to select a few of the skills that you will need as a Nursing assistant.  It will then be necessary to perform those skills in front of a testing proctor to demonstrate your ability.

If you pass the examination, you will then become a certified nursing assistant.  You need to be able to successfully complete both portions of the exam before you will be certified.  Upon certification, you can start to search for a job opportunity in your new field.

Introduction To CNA Training

You can have a rewarding career helping others by working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  As a CNA, you will help people who are sick or injured.  You will work with the nurses  and other healthcare professionals to provide care for those individuals.  A CNA often works in a hospital or continuing care community setting.  You can also find home health jobs providing care for individuals in their own home.  In order to become a CNA, you will need to have training.

There are a variety of ways that you can receive training as a CNA.  Many healthcare facilities offer programs for those who want to become certified as nursing assistants.  You can also find programs through the Red Cross and other community based organizations.  Many community colleges and vocational schools offer CNA training.

The Length of time it takes to complete a CNA training program will depend on the program and whether you are attending classes and clinical experience on a full-time or part-time basis. Some programs can be completed in several weeks while others will take several months. Nursing Assistant training programs will include both class experience and clinical experience.

You will learn a great deal in a CNA training program.  The program will teach you how to provide quality care for your patients.  You will learn how to take vital signs and identify potential problems that should be reported to a nurse or doctor.  When training to become a CNA, you will need to learn how to help patients with their daily activities.  You will often be helping to feed, dress and bathe patients.

CNA training will teach you how to provide excellent bedside manners for your resident.  You will learn how to effectively communicate with your patients in order to provide them the highest level of care.  As a CNA, you are often the person who will have the most contact with the patient throughout the day with nurses and physicians checking in less often.

In order to become certified as a nursing assistant, you will need to learn basic life support skills including CPR.  You will need to know how to act quickly in order to help save a patient.  You will learn how to provide safe and effective care for your patients. You will also need to pass a CNA Certification test.

Some of what you learn will be covered in classroom.  You will learn some basic anatomy and physiology in order to help you to understand how to care for your patients.  Your classroom instruction will help you to be better prepared when it comes time for your practicum studies.  During your clinical based training, you will receive hands on experience caring for patients.  You will put much of what you have learned in the classroom to practice.

You will probably learn the most during your hands on experience.  This is when you get a better feel for what it is like to take care of patients on a daily basis.  Even after you become a CNA, most states require additional training each year to keep you well trained in your field.

CNA Training And Becoming A Nurse Aide

If you want to work in a career as a nursing assistant, there are a few steps that you will need to take.  Some healthcare facilities do have opportunities for nursing assistants that do not require CNA certification. However, if you want to work as a certified nursing assistant, you will need to complete a training course and take an examination before you can do so.  Let’s learn more about CNA training and becoming a nursing aide.

In order to be able to sit for a nursing assistant certification exam, you will need to complete an accredited CNA training program.  These programs are sometimes offered at hospitals, rehabilitation centers and continuing care communities.  You can also search for this type of program at a community college or allied health college.  The American Red Cross in your area might also provide CNA training programs.  If you are not sure where to take a nursing assistant training program, you can contact a healthcare facility in your area.  They should be able to point you in the right direction.

During a CNA training program, you will have classroom instruction, demonstrations and labs as well as clinical hands on experience.  You will learn how to protect a patient’s privacy and provide them with care that gives them the compassion, kindness and dignity they deserve.  Your training course will teach you further people skills so that you can effectively communicate with your patients.

Your CNA training will teach you a variety of other skills.  You will learn how to take a patient’s vital sense and how to make notations in their chart.  The training will teach you how to safely roll over a patient who is unable to move on their own.  You will learn how to use lifts and other devices to aid you in the care of a patient.  Your training will teach you how to bathe a patient and how to change a patient who is unable to go to the restroom on their own.  These are just a few of the skills you will learn during your training.

After you have completed your coursework and clinical experience, you will need to take an examination.  You must pass the examination in order to become a certified nursing assistant.  In most cases, you need to have at least an 80% on your test.  The test will include multiple choice questions that will test your knowledge of how to provide the best care for your patients.  You will then have a skills portion of the test where you will need to demonstrate your ability to perform several different duties as a a nursing assistant.

When you pass your examination, you will become a certified nursing assistant.  In order to continue a career as a nursing aide, you will usually need to complete CEU credits and other educational requirements every year or so.  There will be courses you need to take in order to keep your certification valid.  In some cases, your employer will pay for or help you pay for the continued education.

Getting Your CNA License

Before you can work as a certified nursing assistant in any setting, you will need to complete CNA licensing.  There are several steps to this process.  In most cases it will take you a few weeks to a few months to become a certified nursing assistant.

The exact requirements for licensing are set forth by the state in which you live.  For the most part, the general requirements are similar from state to state.  The number of classroom or clinical hours required can vary.  You might learn more nursing assistant tasks in some states than in another depending on the duties CNA’s are able to perform where you live.

You will need to locate and enroll in a nursing assistant program.  Sometimes a healthcare facility will offer training to people who are interested in becoming a nursing assistant or for new hires.  Nursing schools as well as community colleges provide another good resource for finding nursing assistant licensing programs.

A CNA course will teach you the skills you need to work as a nursing assistant.  There will be classroom training as well as clinical training.  You will get some hands on experience so that you know how to work with patients.  The course will teach you how to help your patients, the steps that you will take in an emergency situation and an assortment of other things that you will need to know when working as a nursing assistant.

If you miss a certain number of CNA training classes or are late too many times, it is possible that you will not be eligible for the CNA certification test.  It is important to make arrangements so that you can be at each class and at the class on time.  If you must miss a course due to illness, talk to the instructor immediately so that you can determine how to make up the work you have missed.

Before you can become a certified nursing assistant, you will need to take the exam.  The exam for certification must meet all requirements as listed by the state.  You will have two parts of the test that you need to finish.  One will ask you multiple questions about a variety of topics.  The second part of the test will be where you demonstrate your skills on a live person.  In some settings this might be a patient in others it will be a model patient.

You will not become certified as a nursing aide until you receive a passing grade on the test.  This means that you need to pass both portions of the test.  It is necessary to repeat the test if you do not pass.  The testing individual will tell you how soon you can test again.  If you do not pass the first time, you can study harder the second time around.  Find someone to help you with your studying if you are really struggling.

Once you become licensed as a nursing assistant, you will be ready to start a new and rewarding career.

Paid CNA Training

Paid CNA training can mean one of two things. It can refer to certified nursing assistant courses that you must pay for rather than receiving for free.  The term paid CNA training, can also refer to the opportunity to get paid while you are training to become a nursing assistant.
Paid Courses

If you are not able to receive nursing assistant training at no cost to you, then you will need to pay for training.  If you attend training at a community college or allied health course, you will be charged for your course.  This type of training is typically considered non-degree education which means you cannot always receive financial aid to take these courses.  That can leave you paying out of your own pocket.

You will probably also be paying for CNA certification training if you complete your coursework at a nursing school.  It might sometimes be possible to receive financial assistance for a portion of your tuition.  The rest of the cost, you will need to pay for on your own.

If you will be needing paid CNA training, you should take your time to find the best value for your money.  Search for training programs with a positive reputation at an affordable price.  Make certain any courses that you take are fully accredited making you eligible for the certification exam.  Do not be tricked into taking a cheaper course if it is not one that allows you to become a certified nursing assistant.
Paid During Training

There are some instances in which you can actually be paid during your CNA training.  Basically you can find a couple ways in which this can occur.  You can be paid in the sense that an employer actually pays for your training for you.  Many nursing home facilities pay for people to become certified.  Upon completion of your certification, you would then need to work for that facility for an agreed upon amount of time.  If you have recently been hired to work as a nursing assistant and need to complete your training, this is a good option for you.

In some cases you can even be paid while you train.  The specifics will be set forth by the employer who is paying for your training.  You might be paid if you are completing a training course that is held directly at the healthcare facility.  If the healthcare facility is not able to offer their own training programs, they might actually pay you for your time to go somewhere else to receive your training.  (They might or might not also pay for your training).  This can benefit you if you will need to miss time at work in order to receive your training.

The above scenario is particularly possible if you were working as a nursing aide who did not need to be certified who now does.  If you are trying to advance your career or your employer has recognized your abilities as a nursing assistant, they might offer to pay you so that you will go for training and become a valued member of their certified nursing assistant team.

Low Cost And Free CNA Training

There is no need to feel overwhelmed by the potential cost associated with CNA training.  It is possible to find low cost and free CNA training.  With a little research and time, you will find the most affordable option for certified nursing assistant training.

If you are currently working in a healthcare facility, you could approach your employer about the possibility of training to become a nursing assistant.  If your facility trains their certified nursing assistants directly, you might be asked to train for your new career at no cost to you.  The facility might not offer training directly but still be able to help.  They might be willing to pay all or part of your tuition for training offered at another location.  You must show your motivation, interest and enthusiasm when looking to your employer to help with CNA training.

It is sometimes possible to receive training at no cost to you if you have been interviewed and hired for a job as a certified nursing assistant.  IT is sometimes possible to be hired before you have your certification. The employer might then offer you access to free CNA training as long as you come work for them.

If you are not working through no fault of your own and wish to start a new career, training to be a nursing assistant might be an option.  Talk to an unemployment officer or someone at a job placement agency for details about potential free or low cost CNA training programs.  You might be able to start your new career without breaking your bank.

The options above might not always fit your particular situation.  This does not mean that you cannot still find affordable training options.  Contact the nursing department of one or more local healthcare facilities for referrals to colleges and other organizations offering CNA training programs.  You can then take the time to research all programs to find out if any offer low cost training.

There are even some CNA training classes that can be completed on the Internet.  Of course, this does not work for your hands on training.  By taking some of the coursework online, you might be able to save some money on tuition.  This will help you to make your training more affordable

If you are taking a training program through a college or university, make certain that the program is not eligible for any type of financial aid or scholarships.  If you find out that it is, you should apply for the the scholarships or financial aid.  Any money that you receive towards the cost of the training program will make it more affordable to you.  In some cases, you might even get enough help to cover the entire cost of the program.

Take your time to search for various CNA training options.  You might find that is it not as difficult as you think to find low cost opportunities when you want to start a career as a certified nursing assistant.

Verification Of A CNA License

To understand how the verification process is for a CNA license it is important to have a brief overview of the CNA licensing process. When you start on the path to a career as certified nursing assistant, you will need to complete CNA training.  After completion of an accredited course, you will need to take the certification licensing exam.  You will not become a licensed certified nursing assistant until you pass that examination.  At that time, you will complete all necessary states (as set forth by the licensing division in your state) to receive your license and license number.

Once you receive your license, you can start to apply for a position as a nursing assistant.  In order to maintain your license, you will need to complete the renewal process each year or so depending on your state.  In some cases, you might start to work as an aide who is not required to be certified.  You might take time off from your career or simply forget about the renewal timeframe.  If any of those things occurs, it might be necessary to verify if your license is still valid or not.
Verifying Your CNA License

·    Visit the National Nurse’s Aide Registry website to find contact details for the CNA licensing office in your area.  Search for the office for your state and area in order to find the telephone number and mailing address.

·    Make certain that you are not able to verify your license and certification online.  The nursing aide registry for some states allows you to check the database of licensed nursing assistants directly online. If you live in one of these states, you can enter your name to find your licensing information and to determine if your license is still valid.

·    Prepare to make a trip the local CNA licensing and registry office if you cannot verify your certification online.  Write down your license number and the date it was issued if you have a copy of your old license.  If for some reason, you do not have this information, you will want to take your social security number and photo identification with you so that your identify can be verified.

·    If you are unsure as to what information you will need in order to obtain your licensing information, you should contact the local registry office before visiting them in person.  You will be required to pay a small fee when you contact the local office for CNA licensing verification.

·    You can obtain a new copy of your license and certification if it is necessary.  Copies can generally be sent to your email address.  If you have your license emailed, you will want to print it out so that you have a copy to keep on file.  You can also opt to have a copy of your license sent to your home mailing address.  It can take a week or two for you to receive your license if you have it sent this way.
Do not forget to have your license transferred to another state if you are moving.  Keep in mind that licensing requirements can vary from state to state.  There might be steps that you need to take in order to have your license be valid in a new state.

If you want to pay more money, you can use a third party verification company in order to verify your licensing information.  This is something you might do if you cannot go to the local licensing office in person for some reason.  Of course, potential employers will go through the steps that they see necessary to verify your license.

Transferring A CNA License

When you are heading to a new state, you will need to transfer your CNA license.  There are some steps you should follow to make it a little less stressful to get your license transferred so that you can begin looking for employment in your new state.

·    The process will vary some depending on the state to where you are moving.  Contact the licensing board in your new state.  You should start looking into the process before you are preparing to move.  Determine whether or not they allow a nursing assistant license to be automatically transferred.  Some states, will accept your license from another state without requiring you to take the certification again in their particular state.

·    Some states will acknowledge your current CNA license by allowing you to work a certain number of hours as a CNA in their state while you are going through the process of having your license transferred.  The specifics will depend on the state to where you are moving.

·    When you are transferring a license, the board of licensing in your new state will again conduct an FBI background check.  They will need to verify your training information and any employment history you had in the other state when working as a certified nursing assistant.  Other details might also need to be provided.

·    It might be necessary to have medical checks again in the new state to where you are moving.  There might be additional vaccines or tests that you need before you will be able to work as a certified nursing assistant there.

·    There are some states that will not make it as easy to transfer your license.  Those states will require you to take the licensing exam in their own state.  This means that you will need to complete and pass both the written and clinical portion of the test.  It might or might not be necessary to complete additional coursework and training before the licensing board will allow you to take the test.  This will depend on the training requirements in the state you are moving from as well as the requirements in the state you are moving to.

·    Contact the licensing board in the state for specific details on how you can transfer your certification.  They will be able to tell you everything that you need to do in order to make the transition go as smoothly as possible.  You will learn what information you must spend to the licensing board and what steps you will need to take to obtain your license in that state.

Do not stress over transferring your CNA license.  It will take some time and might take some extra work but you will be on your way to working in your new state before you know it.

Renewal Of A CNA License

The license renewal for a CNA is discussed after this overview of the licensing process. In order to become a certified nursing assistant, you will need to enroll in and complete a training course.  After passing the training course and completing all requirements, you will need to take the certification exam.  There are two portions of this exam, both of which must be passed in order to receive your certification. Tests can be repeated if necessary for you to pass.
The CNA Exam

There will only be two sections of the exam. One section is referred to as the theoretical test; the other is called the clinical test.  The theoretical test will test you on patient procedure, safety techniques, privacy issues and other information you learned throughout the course.  This part of the test is a written exam with multiple choice questions.  If you study your notes and exams from your course, you should be well prepared for the test.  You can also find samples questions online that will help you to understand what you need to know for the written portion of the test.

You will then need to demonstrate three (sometimes four) or more clinical CNA skills for the examiner.  This is your opportunity to show that you will be able to complete nursing assistant tasks when working with patients.  It is often necessary to bring a friend with you who will act as your patient for the clinical portion of the test.  The examiner will be watching you closely throughout completion of each task.  Do not forget to do things like washing your hands and knock on a patient’s door before entering the room (even if there is no actual door and separate room in the testing area).
licensing Requirements

You will need to follow all instructions by the licensing board in your area in order to receive your license upon completing and passing the exam.  You will need to pay for your examination and license.  The cost will differ depending on the state where you live and can easily cost a few hundred dollars.  Once you have completed all requirements to become a nursing assistant who is licensed, you will be registered with the nursing aid registry and employers can verify your certification.
CNA License Renewal

Your nursing assistant license is not good for life. The renewal will need to be done again on a regular basis.  Many states will require renewal each year.  In order to continue working as a certified nursing assistant, you will need to meet certain requirements as set forth by your state.  Some states will make you complete a specified number of continuing education credits each year. You might also need to work in your field for a certain number of hours each year in order to be able to renew your license.

Shortly before it is time to renew your license, you should receive written notification from the licensing board.  This notice should provide information on how to complete the renewal process. There will be a fee for renewing your license which will be listed on this paperwork.

How To Get A CNA License

There are steps that you will then need to take in order to receive your CNA license.  This is just a basic overview of the process of obtaining your license.  Each state has their own procedures that can differ from one state to another.

·    When you have completed your training course in its entirety, your school will provide you with the application that you need to apply to sit for the certification exam.  You will learn the date and time of your certification exam as well as anything that you will need to bring with you for the exam.

·    Contact the Nursing Aide Registry in your area for an application form to start the process of receiving your CNA license.  Complete the form in its entirety and do not forget to sign the form.  This form should be notarized.  The application will need to be sent to the local portion of the Licensing Office in your state.

·    You might be required to send a copy of photo identification along with your application for licensing.

·    You will need to provide education verification to the CNA licensing authority in your state.  This verification form will show that you completed and passed an accredited CNA training course.  The form can be completed by the instructor at your training program upon completion of your course.  They can submit it to the Nurse Aid Registry in your state for you.

·    Of course, you cannot become a licensed nursing assistant without first having completed and passed the licensing exam.

·    It is necessary to pass a criminal background check before you are able to receive your certified nursing assistant license.  This is something you might have already been required to do before enrolling in a training program.  It might also be necessary to be fingerprinted with the local law enforcement officials.

·    Medical Physicals might also be required to assure the licensing authority that you are in good health and can safely care for patients.  It will be necessary to have a TB test before you can work at a healthcare facility.

·    You must wait for your application to be approved by the Board of Nursing in your area before you can receive your CNA license.  Check with the licensing authorities in your local area. There are sometimes steps you can take to be approved for a temporary license.

The instructor at the school where you completed your certified nursing assistant training can help you learn the process of receiving your license.  You can also contact the local division of the Board of Nursing or the Nursing Aide Registry to help you further navigate your way through the process.

CNA License Requirements

There are a number of requirements that need to be adhered to for you to get your CNA License. You will need to complete a certified nursing assistant training course before you can take the examination for licensing.  The duration of your training course will vary depending on the training program you select.  Courses usually last somewhere form 3 or 4 weeks to six months.  Some training courses are more intense than other.  However, there will be minimum requirements for curriculum that each program must meet according to the state regulations.

There are several different requirements that you will need to fulfill if you intend to obtain your CNA license.  Some of the specifics might vary depending on the state where you live and the licensing requirements for that state.

·    High School Education: You will typically need to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to qualify for a certification program.  It might be necessary to demonstrate that you completed some Biology courses or other particular courses as well.

·    Age: It is necessary to be at least 18 years old if you are going to train to become a certified nursing assistant.  You cannot even enroll in most CNA training courses unless you are 18 years of age.

·    Clinical Experience: You will need to have completed all required clinical training hours during your certification course before you become licensed.  It is usually necessary to complete at least 40 hours of clinical experience. During your clinical experience, you will need to demonstrate your ability to work well with patients.

Taking The CNA Skills Test

The CNA skills test is the second portion of your certification exam. You need to pass this part of the test (as well as the first) in order to become a certified nursing assistant.  During your CNA training course you will have a great deal of skills training.  You will also have some hands on training during your clinical practicum.

Depending on the area where you are completing a CNA, certification test, the skills tests can vary a little.  For example, some tests will make you demonstrate only about 3 different nursing assistant skills, while others will make you demonstrate as many as six.  Some of the skills that you might be asked to demonstrate can vary too depending on the state in which you will be working as a nursing assistant.  There might be some duties in one state that do not fall under the duties of a nursing assistant in another.

Some CNA skills test will allow you to select the duties that you want to demonstrate for the person administering the test.  Other tests will not give you a choice.  You will be asked to complete random tasks as instructed by the testing individual.

There will be someone who will serve as the patient.  This allows you to show your skills before you enter into an actual live setting with patients.   You can be asked to complete simple skills or those that are more complex.  It is likely that you will have to show a combination of the two throughout your test.

You can be asked to demonstrate just about any skill that you will use as a certified nursing assistant.  You might be asked to demonstrate how you would feed a patient who is unable to eat on their own.  The instructor might ask you to show how you would take a patient’s vital signs for the beginning of your shift.  Your test administrator might ask you to show the proper way to reposition a patient in order to prevent bedsores. These are just a few of the skills you might be asked to model during your skills test for CNA certification.

Remember all aspects of a test when tasking.  For example, you must wash your hands before contact with each patient.  Regardless of what your skill is that you will be demonstrating you should show that you remember to wash your hands.  You cannot enter into a patient’s room (even if it is not actually a patient but merely the person helping you model your skills) without knocking on their door.

When you are preparing to take the CNA skills test, you should study all the material you covered during your training course.  If you have access to CNA training Classes demonstration videos, you should watch those and practice along before it is time to take your test.  Practice the skills that you will need to demonstrate with friends or family members to prepare you for testing under the pressure of being watched and graded.  Do not despair if you do not pass on your first attempt.  Just give it another go when you are able.

CNA Certification Programs

Choosing a CNA Certification Program is a Crucial Step!

One of the first steps of starting a career in the medical field is through CNA Training courses and programs. Being a very popular track for many individuals today, there are a lot of online and school-based CNA certification programs available to students, whether in the United States or in other countries all over the world. But because of this large number, it also opens potential threats from bogus courses and non-accredited programs offered by these opportunists. This is why students should always be careful when choosing the right CNA certification program for them, so that they can be assured of their step towards a better future in the medical field.

That is why it is very important for students in CNA certification programs to choose the right one for them. They can do so by looking through the school’s accreditation, ranking, and facilities. Even with an online program, it is also very important to look through these criteria so that the student can be recognized as bona fide member of the medical field, with a salary to match. If the school or online program is not accredited, then the student would not be able to reach all of these goals, and their weeks of effort would be put to waste.

Rankings are one of the main determinants to see if a school or online course is certified for CNA Training or not. These are one of the easiest ways to see if a school can give you the best CNA certification program or not. But it is also important to remember that rankings are subjective, based on whatever is being measured. For example, one school might be on top of the rankings based on high exam scores while another school would rank the highest in the satisfaction of students.

Above all else, the school or the online program should have valid accreditation before a student should choose it for their CNA training. The student can ask from their local registry of the list of accredited schools and online courses which provide CNA certification training so that he or she can be sure which school would be best for their training. If possible, the student should also check out the facilities so that they can be sure which of these would have the best amenities for them.

Whether in an online course setting, or a school program, the student should know that these accredited CNA training programs should offer in-clinic practical situations for different areas such as hospitals, nursing homes and the like. Subjects that you would have to take in class would include anatomy, physiology, nursing skills, diet and nutrition, patient hygiene and infection control among others. Written and oral examinations, practical demonstrations and skills testing may also be included. These exercises will help the student greatly for the CNA certification exams, so it is very important to acquire their CNA training from a high-ranking and accredited school or online site. This is their first step toward their medical career so they should be able to get it from the best.

Choosing The Right Training Classes

How to choose the right CNA training classes

When going into a CNA Training class, this is usually one of the most important steps that you have to take before you enter a career in the medical field. For others, this may also be the easiest step to a career in the health care industry, because it is affordable, easy to manage and doesn’t consume much of your time, as compared to other courses in the healthcare industry. Of course, despite these facts, one should not look down on the profession of a certified nursing assistant. (CNA). There are a lot of opportunities for a CNA, especially in the medical field. This can only be the start of a journey to become a registered nurse.

CNA classes use both theories and practical skills training to be able to prepare their students with the proper abilities to carry themselves well in whatever setting they would choose to work in. the curriculum may vary though for each state, since different states have different standards for certification for nursing assistants. This is why it is important to ensure that the school or site that the student will be taking his or her CNA training classes is accredited with the state certification board so that they would not put their time and efforts to waste.

But usually a CNA class will tackle the following topics, no matter which state you may be in. These are classes on the anatomy and physiology of the body, roles and responsibilities of a nursing assistant, infection control and safety, effective communication and interpersonal relationships with patients, co-workers and supervisors in hospitals and the like, personal care procedures for patients, such as oral hygiene, change of clothes and skin care. Other classes would include nutritional requirements and the techniques and tools for it, exercise and healthy activities, checking for vital signs, environmental comfort for patients and clients, and care for patients who suffer special conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and respiratory diseases among others.

As a student under a CNA certification course, they would have to learn the theory and the skills needed to accomplish their work. They would be required to attend weekday classes, spanning from 4 up to 6 hours. This is true for both classroom courses and those that are taken online. They would also need to have in-clinic training, in accredited health establishments for them to finish their course. That is why it is important to have hard work and dedication for these kinds of courses.

The cost of a CNA certification course is relatively affordable, as compared to other health-related courses. A four to six week course would range from $500 to $1,000. Online courses are cheaper, especially for students since transportation costs would not need to be incurred. Scholarships from schools are also available for students, as well as third-party sponsorships and financial help from hospitals would also be available for students who would want to enroll CNA training.

After passing the CNA certification course and exam, there are a lot of job opportunities available for students in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and the like. A CNA’s hourly rate would be from $10 to $15, which would be $20,000 to $30,000 annually. That is why taking a CNA course is truly beneficial and worthwhile for all those who want to take their place in the medical field.

CNA Practice Tests

CNA Practice Tests? Are They Any Good?

After finally going through the CNA certification course, the next step for students would be to pass the CNA certification exam. Once they are able to overcome this hurdle, they can become registered certified nursing assistants, and can start looking for work in their respective field.

But before a student should take the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program (NNAAP) certification exam, they should be well-prepared for the test. They should have paid attention in class during the training, making sure that they understood all of the skills that were being taught to them. They can also take reviewers, such as practice tests, which are available in many online sites and even in the school itself.

The exam has two parts: the first would be a written or oral exam, and the second would be a skills-demonstration test. To be called a certified nursing assistant, the student must be able to pass both exams for him or her to claim their certification and be accredited in their local registry as a certified nursing assistant.

Unfortunately, the practice exams only cover the written part of the exam. This part is in a multiple-choice type of exam so the student will only have to shade the correct answer to be able to pass this part of the test.

Bear in mind that the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) did not in any way, provide these practice exams, nor do they endorse them. That is why if the student would want to be sure in the practice exam that he or she will be taking, the best way to choose the exam would be from the guidance and the expert advice of the teachers, instructors or certified nursing assistants themselves.

For the written part of the exam, there are a number of parts which you would want to remember, especially when finally taking your exam. The examinee should look back at the topics that they have discussed during the course of the program so that he or she would know what topics they will encounter in the exam. To mention them quickly, these parts would include, physical care, or relating to the patients’ hygiene, nutrition and sleep; basic nursing skills such as infection control, therapeutic skills, and emergency procedures. Other parts would include psychosocial care, which deals with the patients’ other needs, such as emotional, spiritual and mental needs; roles of a CNA which would include ethics, synergy, teamwork and the communication skills expected of a CNA, mainly his or her roles and responsibilities; and injury prevention and self-care, which deals with teaching their patients how to take care of themselves and not to cause harm.

It is advisable for students to treat practice exams seriously, so that they will know which areas to improve on, and what could be your strengths and weaknesses during the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program (NNAAP) certification exam. They should be focused and energized when taking these exams so that they can be prepared for the real thing.

CNA Training Program Information

If you are interested in a career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), you will want to consider CNA training programs available to you.  As a nursing assistant, you will help the nursing staff provide care and compassion for patients.  There are a variety of ways to train to become a nursing assistant.  You should take some time to search for the program that best fits your need and your budget if you are completing a program that charges tuition.

Some vocational schools and community colleges offer certified nursing assistant programs.  These programs can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the complexity of the program.  CNA programs through a community college are usually non-credit courses that prepare you for the examination to become a CNA.

There are nursing homes and other healthcare facilities that will provide hands on training for individuals who want to become a nursing assistant.  You can attend one of these programs in preparation to receive your certification as a nursing assistant.  Sometimes these programs will be designed for people who have already been hired for employment as a CNA for the facility.
It is sometimes possible to pay a fee to take a CNA program at a hospital or nursing simply to become a certified nursing assistant (This means you will not necessarily become employed by the facility).  These programs will usually offer you both classroom and clinical training experience so that you can then take the test to become a nursing assistant.

The Red Cross in your area might offer a CNA training program.  Many local Red Cross programs offer comprehensive CNA training programs.  You will complete both the skills and classroom portion of the training.  After which time, you will take an examination in order to receive your certification.

There are times when you might be able to complete some of your CNA training online.  There are some programs that will help you to complete some of your CNA training online.  Of course, your hands on experience cannot be completed online.  That will need to be completed at a hospital or continuing care community in your area.

Search for CNA training programs that are fully accredited in your area.  You should be able to check with your state to ensure that a program is fully recognized in your state.  This is important so that you will be able to work as a certified nursing assistant.  Keep in mind that there might be some programs that will train you to be a nursing assistant but will not result in certification.

In some settings, you do not need to be certified to work as a nursing assistant.  In those cases, you might be considered a nurses aid or a home health aide.  Your duties can differ from those of a certified nursing assistant.  This is why it is important to evaluate each nursing assistant program so that you know what you are receiving.

What Does Being a CNA Mean

It takes more than just training to become a CNA

A complete healthcare team immensely benefits from the presence of certified nursing assistants who play important functions in a variety of medical situations. Long-term care institutions, hospitals, community care institutions, and nursing homes have CNAs working for them. CNAs also work at the homes of patients as health assistants. Most of the tasks of CNAs are similar although the institution or workplace determines the tasks required from a CNA.

It is important to be aware of the basic personal characteristics needed by a CNA in order to recognize the nature of their job. Primarily, the work of a CNA focuses on the basic notion that they need to provide the best possible care for the patients. This basic notion will ultimately succeed when it is founded on the fundamental attributes of Compassion, Care, and Empathy.

Compassion is the sympathetic feeling you have for someone who is experiencing grief or has a medical condition. Although you may not be able to fully comprehend the entire situation, it is important for to exert effort in order to have compassion included into the care program.

It is essential for healthcare professionals to offer the best possible care that they were trained for to their patients at any given situation. This particular concept requires the healthcare professional to be aware of the needs of the patient. If you are aware of the situation of the patients, you will be able to fully comprehend the situation and deal with their apprehensions and needs.

Empathy is a characteristic that is closely related to compassion. However, it brings this emotion to the next level since a higher level of awareness for the concerns and needs of the patients is needed. You may have to put yourself in the situation of patient in order to demonstrate empathy. For instance, how would you want the CNA to treat you if you are experiencing pain, an illness or anxiety?

Things To Consider

The job of a CNA requires similar responsibilities in most locations although these tasks have the tendency to have some minor differences in some situations. For instance, it may be necessary for you to have more responsibilities if you are in a hospital, which is dependent on the floor you are assigned.

On the other hand, a CNA assigned as a home-health assistant may have a number of other responsibilities that are not connected to health, like food preparation and household duties.

Although the location may determine a number of these responsibilities, it is essential to keep in mind that you should put into practice the traditional personal traits of a professional CNA of compassion, care, and empathy.

CNA Responsibilities

Responsibilities and Duties of CNAs

Among the tasks required of a CNA is to facilitate the daily activities of residents of nursing homes.

After becoming aware of the important qualities and attributes required for a professional CNA, it is essential to look into the specific tasks that all CNAs will have to deal with in the course of their profession. Some of the tasks that are normally handled by CNAs in different healthcare locations are as follows:

Regulation of Infection – Standard procedures should be followed by all members of a health care team in order to regulate the spread of microorganisms in a medical facility. A CNA professional should be aware of the current practices in reducing the spread of microorganisms that cause diseases through continued education programs. Infection can also be regulated by the proper disposal of dirty items such as linen and frequent hand-washing.

Personal Cleanliness – This task involves the washing and bathing of patients including assisting them in showering whenever necessary. Helping patients in their grooming like nail-trimming and hair brushing are essential components in the proper hygiene of the patients. It may also be necessary to assist patients when they get dressed for the day.

Giving Treatments – CNA professionals work with a number of medical devices that include bedpans, pneumatic compression equipment, bladder scanners, and anti-embolism stockings, among others. They may also facilitate the treatment of the patient like massaging them.

Nutritional Needs – One of the responsibilities of CNAs is to provide sufficient nutrition for the patients. Although a number of patients can eat by themselves, some may need assistance during mealtimes. It may also be necessary for the CNA to be record the food that they eat along with the quantity to maintain the proper nutrition of the patient.

Reports – Since a CNA is in direct daily contact with the patient, they are considered important members of the healthcare team of the patient. Due to this, the observations of the CNA are important in the healthcare plan of the patient. The CNA should maintain a record of the health status of the patient, including the intake, output, and vital signs in addition to other similar relevant observations. These observations should be communicated to the CNAs of the other shifts, the Charge Nurses, and the Registered Nurse staff members.

Emotional Support – CNAs should not only focus on the physical care of the patients since these patients also require emotional support. The daily routine of the CNA indicates that they have a significant amount of interaction with the patients. The CNAs have a better idea of the anxieties, apprehensions, and moods of the patients. This makes CNAs good liaisons between the medical staff and the patients themselves when it comes to the needs of the patients. Moreover, when CNAs pay attention to and advise the patients, they may alleviate some of the anxieties and daily concerns of the patients.
