Washington State Regulations for CNA Certification

Washington state actually requires more coursework than required by the federal government for CNA certification. You will need to know and understand this in order to get certification in the state. Here are a few key things to know.

    There are a total of 85 hours of coursework required for CNA certification in Washington. This coursework will include written class work and clinical hands on training. All work must be passed.An additional class must be taken and passed that is a focus CNA course involving HIV and AIDS. This class must be taken in the state. In order to move on and schedule the exam, you must have a certificate showing you took the class.The CNA certification exam is called the NAC exam in Washington State. You will need to pass this within three tries in order to get CNA certification. The exam consists of two parts as well: written and clinical. There will be a total of 25 skills covered on the exam. If you do not pass the exam on the third try, all CNA classes will have to be repeated. The exam is administered by Pearson Vue.After passing the exam, you will need to make sure your name is added to the nurse aide certification registry. Employers cannot legally hire you if your name is not on that registry. To keep your CNA certification valid, you must renew it every two years. In order to renew the certification, you will have to show proof of employment through the past two years. If you allow the certification to expire, then you will have to retake the CNA exam before you can get the certification reinstated.Choosing CNA Classes
