How to Become a Certified Nursing Assistant in North Dakota

The North Dakota Department of Health oversees all CNA certification programs in the state. They also manage the registry as well, but have contracted with D&S Diversified Technologies to provide testing services, scoring, and notifications. Anyone who wants to work as a CNA must be trained in an approved program, apply for testing, pass the state exam, and appear on the state CNA registry.

Eligibility Requirements

There are always eligibility requirements for anyone who will train as a CNA in North Dakota, and they include:

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age;Candidates must have proof of high school graduation or a GED;Candidates are required to submit to background checks that include fingerprint data and felony records; andAll candidates must have a health screening to ensure immunizations are up to date, negative TB, drug screening is completed, and that the candidate is capable of performing the work.

Applying for CNA Certification in North Dakota

Some candidates do not need to take an approved program if they meet the following descriptions:

All of the North Dakota CNA certification programs require at least 75 hours divided between 16 clinical and the remainder in classroom work. After the hours are done, a candidate must apply to take the exam. They do so through the D&S website, and will be notified when they can sit for the exam. There are many approved testing locations, and it will be up to the candidate to choose the most convenient location.

All of the tests follow the same format – written and skills exams. The written (which can be requested as an oral exam) will include 72 multiple choice questions, and the skills includes five CNA skills randomly chosen from a long list of possible options.

Costs

According to the North Dakota Board of Nursing, the cost for the exam is a flat $120 fee. This does not include the training programs that candidates might choose. These can range from $300 to around $1000.

It is important to keep in mind that federal laws stipulate that a Medicare or Medicaid approved nursing facility will have to reimburse their CNAs for any testing and training fees. A student could get fully reimbursed as long as they were hired within 12 months of completing their program.
