In order to become eligible for CNA training in Maine, you need to be at least 16 years of age and while you do not have to be a high school graduate, you will have to be able to provide proof that you successfully completed all grades up to grade 9. The program generally runs about 11 weeks and costs $1000, but can be less depending on where you are training.
CNA’s are permitted only to work under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, and as such are not permitted to do private duty work.
The Division of Licensing and Regulatory services maintains responsibility over the facilities that provide the CNA programs in Maine. However, for the time being the Department of Education is responsible for providing location information. You can call them at 207-624-6711 or visit them online.
Taking the CNA Competency TestIn Maine, you are required by law to take a test that has two parts to it, which demonstrates your ability to be well established in your field. During the test, you will be required to take a multiple-choice test orally or written, whichever you prefer but you must also perform a skills demonstration.
How Do I Get My Name On The Registry?You will have to send in an application for in order to become listed on the Certified Nursing Aide Registry. If you completed your CNA training in Maine, you can get the application here. There is no fee for submitting to the registry. You will need to send the following information in with your application:
- Your CNA training certificate, which you will have received upon completion of your state-approved programYour Social Security CardYour current, valid driver’s license or an alternative state or federally issued photo ID like a passport. Student ID cards are not accepted.Letters from your employer detailing your employment as a CNA over the course of the last 24 monthsThe criminal background check that was completed before you were accepted into your CNA classes.

The form used for application is the same form that you will use for renewal. There is no fee for renewing your status on the registry but you must meet the following three eligibility requirements:
- You have worked, for pay, at least 8 hours in the last 2 years as a Certified Nursing Aide in a healthcare facility.You submit your application for renewal prior to the expiration of your current certificationYou do have any unbecoming misconduct on your record and have no disqualifying convictions or infractions on your criminal background check
If you do not meet these requirements, you are removed from the registry and you must re-certify in order to re-register.
