In order to work legally as a Certified Nurse Aide in Hawaii, you must enroll in CNA classes in Hawaii to complete one of the state-approved CNA programs, pass the written and skills examination and pass a criminal background check.

CNA Training Programs in HawaiiWhile CNA programs vary in Hawaii depending on the facility in which you choose to train, there are some minimum standards that all facilities must adhere to when providing CNA training. These standards include providing at least 100 hours of training, which is made up of 30 hours of specific CNA classes, and 70 hours of clinical and practical training.
While taking CNA classes in Hawaii, you can expect to learn about the “bedside manner” that you hear so much about in the healthcare industry as well as caring for patients, preventing and controlling the spread of infection, what to do in the event of an emergency in different settings (private home, hospital and nursing home) as well as skills like changing dressings and lifting heavy or immobile patients so as to prevent injury.
There are currently only 29 programs that are approved for CNA training in Hawaii. Once you find an appropriate training program, contact the coordinator at the facility to find out how to register for the program and what fees are involved.
The most popular option is the American Red Cross, which exceeds state recommendations for CNA programs by offering a 130-hour course (84 hours of classes and 35 hours of clinicals) and smaller class sizes. Once you start class, there are certain requirements including dress code as well as attendance. The American Red Cross is responsible for administering the final exam to students of CNA training programs across the state of Hawaii. There is a fee of $275, which must be paid in order to write the state exam.
There are two parts to the exam (skills and written) and it can all be done within the course of a day. You must however, take the skills test first and pass before you are permitted to take the written test.
Test takers have their exams graded and are provided with their results on the same day that they take the test.
