The healthcare industry is projecting a boom of between 20-30% over the course of the next few years. What Does A CNA Do?

Great question! A CNA is responsible for many of the same duties as a Registered Nurse is. These duties can include anything from providing personal care to a patient to more complicated tasks like assisting with rehabilitative exercises. Most CNA’s eventually train to become Licensed Practical Nurses or even Registered Nurses, so becoming a CNA is an important first step.

Well, first you will need to sign up for CNA training! These state-approved programs are monitored closely to ensure that the quality of the educational services is maintained. In Florida, there are 355 licensed locations where you can receive this training. We’ve provided you with a detailed listing of the facilities that conduct these programs here.

Get in touch with the contact listed in a facility close to you and inquire about when their next program starts. The price of the training can run close to $1,000, which includes your program costs, uniform and supplies. Speak to the facility to find out if they cover the cost of the program in exchange for a job placement upon completion.

If they do not, then get in touch with the Workforce and Continuing Education Department. They have grants that help you pay for not only the course, but also assist with your transportation costs and childcare (if required) as well.

Depending on which facility you train with, you can expect anywhere from the state minimum of 65 hours of instruction, right up to 120 hours of instruction. CNA classes in Florida consist of both time in the classroom as well as in a clinical setting working with patients.

I’m Done My Program, Now What?

You’ll need to take the CNA exam in order to qualify for certification. You will have to submit the application to take the exam with the $25 processing fee as well as the $40.50 background screening fee and the $93 examination fee. It is important to note that if you have a criminal record, you will be ineligible to work as a CNA if it consists of a felony conviction, violent crime, theft or abuse. In the first quarter of 2012, the pass rate for the exam sat at 75%. This rate is for first-time passes, which means that the students did not require a second or third examination in order to get through. The course and coursework are challenging, and students must apply themselves in much of the same way as you would if you were working towards an engineering degree!

How Often Do I Have To Renew My Certification?

You only have to renew every two years, and you will receive notification of the renewal 120 days before your certification is set to expire. In order to renew, the state will verify that you have been employed as a Certified Nurse Assistant with your current or former employer. Once verified, you are granted your certification for another 24-month period. You can renew by mail or online here and the fee is $55.

The average state salary for a CNA sits at $28,000 plus benefits, per year. The great part about being a CNA is that you have flexible working hours if you need them.
