CNA Certification in Oregon

The state of Oregon takes the certification of nursing assistants very seriously.  Nursing assistants provide nursing related duties (primarily non-medical) to patients in a variety of healthcare settings.

Oregon Training Hours and Requirements

You will need to complete 150 hours of training in order to become a certified nursing assistant in the state of Oregon.  Training programs must be approved by the state of Oregon and will need to include classroom and clinical instruction.  Once you graduate from a training program, you will be able to sit for the nursing assistant certification examination.

Transfer CNA Certification Through Endorsement to Oregon

Oregon offers certification by endorsement for individuals who currently hold certification from a different state.  To qualify to apply for certification through endorsement in the state of Oregon, you need to have worked for 400 hours in the past 2 years as a certified nursing assistant or in a position providing nursing assistant duties.  Those hours of work must have been under the supervision and must have been for pay.

The Endorsement application will require you to submit proof that you received training at a state-approved nursing assistant training program in your former state.  You will also need to send in verification of your nursing assistant certification from that state.  All details will be verified before your application can be considered.   Please keep in mind that you cannot complete the application for endorsement if your certification is expired in another state.

If you previously completed a nursing assistant training program or previously worked as a certified nursing assistant in another state, you might qualify to sit for the certification exam without needing to take a training course again.  You will need to contact the Nurse Aide Registry in Oregon for more details.

Nursing Assistant Certification Renewal

When you hold a nursing assistant certification, you will need to renew your certification every two years.  The State Board of Nursing in Oregon will send you your renewal papers.  They should be sent out to you about 6 or 8 weeks before your certification will expire.  Contact the Board of Nursing if you do not have the papers a few weeks before recertification is due.

Complete all paperwork in its entirety and do not forget to submit any requested fees or documentation.  There are a few criteria that must be met for you to be able to renew your license.  You will need to have worked for a minimum of 400 hours of pay over a two-year period.  The work must be in a position where you provide nursing related duties (tasks that you are authorized to complete as a certified nursing assistant).  You must work under the direction of a professional nurse when you are working.
